Franklin, Indiana is one that cherishes its rich history while working toward a progressive future. Twenty miles south of Indianapolis, the city is most widely known for Franklin College but is also features architectural structures, family-friendly amenities, and community events that make it unique.

 Franklin serves as the Johnson County Seat. The historic Johnson County Courthouse is one of the city’s gems. The Courthouse, beautifully preserved, along with a number of other well-maintained homes and brick streets are a nod to Franklin’s heritage. Also in quaint downtown Franklin are a host of local eateries, shops, and cafes.

 The Artcraft Theatre is another Franklin favorite. A classic 1920s Art Deco movie theatre, the Artcraft originally showed silent films. It now features classic films on weekends, foreign films, and other events like concerts and a B-movie festival.

 Other downtown attractions include Fourth Fridays in summer months and the Franklin Farmer’s Market. Fourth Fridays include classic car shows, events at the Artcraft, and more celebratory activities for families.

 Franklin College is a small, four-year undergraduate institution, home to approximately 1,000 students year-round. The scenic, wooded campus sets it apart from the hustle and bustle of large universities. Franklin College contributes youth and vitality to the city.

 A short drive to downtown Indianapolis, Franklin residents have the benefit of quaint and comfortable surroundings as well as access to major health care facilities and big city entertainment options.

RECREATION

Franklin’s nine city parks provide facilities for swimming, tennis, horseshoes and supervised craft/hobby classes. The Historic Franklin Greenway Trails offer nearly 3 miles of trails for walking, running, biking, and roller blading. Franklin Memorial Swimming Pool is located adjacent to the Cultural Arts & Recreation Center at the corner of South Street and Branigin Blvd. It offers an Olympic-sized pool with diving well, 160-foot water slide, two-foot depth tot pool area, water basketball, concession stand and sun decks. Johnson County Recreation Area, 12 miles south of Franklin, has 561 acres for picnics, primitive camping, scout camping, horseshoes and a horse park. It is surrounded by the State Fish and Wildfire Area. In nearby Brown County State Park are deer, nature trails, saddle clubs, boating and water sports. The 10,000 acre Lake Monroe is within a one-mile drive.

FUN FACTS

Franklin became nationally famous during the 1920s due to the fame of the local basketball team that became known as the Franklin Wonder Five. A small group who had played together as boys, led by Fuzzy Vandivier and coached by Griz Wagner, went on to become the first high school team to win the state championship for 3 consecutive years (1920-22). They then moved on to local Franklin College where they were proclaimed national champions in 1923 and even turned down an offer to play the top professional team New York Celtics.

In December of 1940, Bernard Hoffman, a Life Magazine staff photographer, shot a photo essay in Franklin called “A Small Town’s Saturday Night”
