FUN FACTS

Plainfield was named for the early Quakers who settled in the area and who were considered “plain”.

As a result of President Van Buren vetoing a highway improvement bill from Congress, a practical joke was staged when he came through Plainfield in 1842 campaigning for the 1844 election. His stage coach was deliberately spilled into the mud of the deficient highway. The elm tree whose roots caused the spill became known as the Van Buren Elm, and is also how nearby Van Buren Elementary School got its name.
