I am born and raised Indy and have spent the last 10 years of life primarily downtown and on the city’s near eastside. Ten years ago I was a civic leadership major at IUPUI’s SPEA, living in an Old Northside 1920’s apartment, and working two jobs downtown. I would soon be working for the department of metropolitan development with grants that funded urban development and services. At that time I was certain I would one day leave Indianapolis for a cooler city.
Instead I soon found people who loved Indy’s urban area like me and city amenities and opportunities started to take shape. I began riding the bus, walking or riding my bike to work every day and would go weeks without using my car. I slowly fell in love with the city I initially found to be so plain jane.
I now live with my two kids in the eastside’s beloved Irvington that grows in beauty every day. I often compare it to Mayberry, as it is the city’s best small town within a city, just five miles east of downtown. I still love to explore the city by bike and attend the many, many festivals, art events and brewery happenings. And in between all that I can be found rock climbing at one of Indy’s indoor gyms.
Now I am constantly torn between my love of Irvington and the excitement downtown. Needless to say, leaving Indy is no longer an option!
